Our client is a City of London law firm handling corporate and property transactions and commercial disputes.
The corporate tax group forms part of their corporate department, which contributes approximately 30% of the firm’s annual turnover and comprises approximately 48 fee earners.
The corporate department increased its turnover by 25% in 2007/2008. Continuing, fee-driven growth is planned in all of the specialist groups comprised within the department, including the corporate tax group.
The corporate tax group is a critical part of the firm’s business and is one of the specialities for which the firm is best known.
Unusually for mid-sized firms, the group’s reputation generates a considerable amount of stand-alone advisory work as well as significant number of tax-led deals. Much of the strategic tax planning is for private or overseas owned companies and the group has been pivotal in developing the firm’s investment funds and structured property practices.
Their “Corporate deals” highlight documents for 2005-2007 illustrate how the corporate tax group has generated, and under-pinned, many of the corporate group’s most significant projects. Indeed, tax has been referred to by Legal 500 as the “golden thread” which runs through the firm’s practice.
The role:
Advise on three of the group’s main work streams: M&A; advice to the property sector including investment funds, and employee incentives. In addition, there are significant opportunities on the international tax side where potential contacts have not been fully exploited and the successful candidate will help in developing these.
The role offers considerable client contact and a good opportunity to become a highly valued member of the firm.
The candidate:
The corporate tax group is seeking an assistant who may have a minimum of 5 yrs PQE to contribute to the team and to develop the practice, working closely with the partner. He or she will already be in private practice and will preferably have a City background. The right candidate will combine technical expertise with approachability and an ability to deal easily with entrepreneurial clients.
