Living and working in Japan

Japan is a country known around the world for a deeply traditional culture contrasted with a sleek and ultra-modern face. The Japan experience is a fascinating one for visitors and residents alike, and the size of Japan's economy ensures that there is a constant demand for qualified specialists in the disciplines for which we recruit.

Robert Walters Japan has offices in Tokyo and Osaka and a well-established client network to help you with your career progression. Candidates should be aware that for most roles in Japan especially within business development require a business level of fluency in Japanese.

However, as noted below there are some types of roles in IT, financial services, and contracting which can accommodate non-Japanese speakers, provided they have a relevant degree, prior Japan experience, and are prepared to come to Japan for interviews.

IT

IT roles within the investment banking sector do not require Japanese fluency, and about 20% of those within technology firms are also accessible to non-Japanese speakers.

Financial Services

Product control, market risk and derivative law roles are available, and candidates with limited Japan experience can also find work as traders, hedge fund sales, junior brokers, and occasionally financial analysts. Additionally, there are some English language management reporting roles, and experienced, senior candidates at the VP level or above but without Japanese language skills can be placed in project management, operational risk, business analysis, and operations roles.

Contracting

We have contractor positions for most IT jobs (helpdesk to project management) that are suitable for non-Japanese speakers. In addition, there are some higher level accounting contract and operations roles for those candidates with sufficient financial product knowledge.

On the other hand, for candidates who have at least a business level fluency in Japanese, are eligible for a working visa, and have experience in one or more of the disciplines listed below, please contact your local International Career Manager who will offer you advice on the Japanese recruitment market. Suitable candidates will be transferred to a local specialist consultant and an interview will be arranged via video conference before you arrive, or face-to-face upon arrival.
