CV advice and references
A poorly written CV will almost certainly have a negative influence on any potential employer. After all, it is the first opportunity they will have to judge how well you present yourself. In order to create a positive impression, follow these basic guidelines and refer to your Robert Walters consultant with any additional questions/queries.
- Length - keep it short and as relevant as possible (maximum two pages)
- Content - keep your information concise. You should split your information into sections such as personal information, qualifications, employment history and interests
- Personal information and qualifications - include name, address, telephone number (day and evening), e-mail address and date of birth. List qualifications chronologically and give grades
- Employment history - begin with the most recent job first. Make sure you include your responsibilities, how long you were there and your reason for leaving. Do not leave out any period of employment for whatever reason, as this may prove awkward at interview stage
- Referee details - should be included for your most recent five year employment history (where applicable), even when you have written references. It is essential that you supply sufficient information, which allows us or a potential employer to contact referees, regardless of whether they are in The Netherlands or overseas
- Personal interests - writing about your interests is important, but do not generalise. Make sure you expand on your subjects for example, instead of simply saying 'football' you can expand and say you have played for a local club for the last four years and are now the publicity officer for the committee
- References - prior to being placed on an assignment with Robert Walters, all candidates must be referenced for their most recent five year employment history where applicable - it is therefore essential that you provide your consultant with copies of all your written references and referee details for your most recent five year employment history
