Graduate careers in Sydney
Jack Brown recently joined the Robert Walters graduate programme in Sydney. We find out why he chose Robert Walters, what a typical day involves and his tips for those considering a career in recruitment.
Why did you choose the Robert Walters graduate programme?
After graduating from Macquarie University, Sydney with a Bachelor of Commerce, I decided that I wanted to pursue a career where you can drive your own success, regardless of age or experience. I chose the Robert Walters Graduate Program as it offers graduates a valuable range of skills, support and expertise through on the job training. During the initial interview, I sat with an experienced recruiter who took me through what it is like to be a consultant and the end to end recruitment process.
I liked the fact that I had access to a senior consultant within the business and that the structured training plan was outlined to me so I could make an informed decision about joining.
How did you find the recruitment process?
The recruitment process was exciting and engaging from start to finish. I applied through Grad Connection, a website where companies advertise entry level roles for graduates looking for their first professional role. Within a few days I was contacted by the HR team and invited to the graduate day along with five others where we ran through a series of role plays, individual and group presentations based on work-related scenarios.
Following this, I went through three further interviews which were quite intense but also challenged me to think about why I was choosing a career in recruitment.
I was invited back to meet the directors of each department before a final interview with James Nicholson, Director of Australia and New Zealand. As a graduate, James was the most senior person I’d ever met in a recruitment process so it showed me that Robert Walters is committed to recruiting, training and developing the right people for the organisation. I was offered the role and joined Robert Walters in August 2016.
What have been the highlights so far?
The highlight for me so far would have to be receiving ‘Rookie of the Quarter’ in Q1 this year. It felt great to achieve strong results in such a short period of time. Outside of this, it’s the people at Robert Walters that make the work so enjoyable, everyone across the business is social and supportive.
What is a typical day for you?
A typical day begins with a team meeting which we refer to as ‘review’. We review the candidates we have met the previous day and discuss their profiles with the team, and how we can assist them with their job search. Before lunch, I take a look over my ad responses, with the afternoon saved for business development where we call clients to discuss the candidates that we have met and how they would benefit their business. The day is always wrapped up with admin, writing up meeting notes, going through emails and recording placements through the system. Client relationships are very important in my role, so the priority for me is to meet and network with clients over lunch or coffee.
What advice do you have for those considering recruitment?
If you are determined and want to drive your own success, I would highly recommend recruitment at Robert Walters. You are given autonomy with professional guidance to build valuable business relationships. Every day is a new challenge and a new opportunity to reach your goals, whilst also being a part of the team’s success. It is quite rewarding meeting a new client and placing talented candidates with them for the first time. You feel a great sense of achievement.
Describe the culture at Robert Walters.
The culture is the best part of Robert Walters. It’s collaborative, supportive and professional, whilst also being extremely sociable. We regularly have team nights out and office-wide events when we’ve achieved our targets. From my peers in Sydney to my manager and the company’s senior management, everyone is inclusive and approachable.
