Growing recruitment careers at home and abroad


Ashley Peacock began her career with the Robert Walters Group in 2011 as a recruitment consultant in Brisbane. In 2013, she moved to London, joining our recruitment process outsourcing business, Resource Solutions as an on-site recruiter.

Ashley has recently made the move back to Australia and now works as a senior recruitment partner with one of our global banking clients in Sydney. We asked Ashley about growing her career in recruitment at home and abroad.


Tell us about your career progression with the Robert Walters Group.

I joined the Robert Walters Group as a fresh graduate and I hadn’t had much exposure to the world of recruitment, so I didn’t know what to expect. However, I very quickly realised that I’d made the right choice in choosing a career in recruitment. It was clear that I was going to be continually challenged and there would be plenty of scope for me to grow both personally and professionally.

When I decided to move to the UK, I was really keen to stay within the Robert Walters Group. A role became available at Resource Solutions as a hybrid recruiter covering London and Glasgow with one of their global financial services clients. I wanted a new challenge so I was really excited to explore a new approach to recruitment.

In just three years, I worked my way up from recruiter to account team leader gaining a wealth of experience recruiting across operations, legal, compliance, finance, risk, projects, marketing, HR, and support.

How did Resource Solutions support your move abroad?

At the end of 2016, I decided to move back to Australia to be closer to family and friends. Shortly after I notified the internal resourcing team, one of the directors in the APAC team contacted me to set up a meeting about a senior recruitment partner role with a new client we had won based in Sydney.

From there the process was incredibly smooth. I began my move back to Australia and whilst I was on holiday in Dubai my offer came through. My start date was confirmed shortly after and both my account director and the HR team stayed in touch regularly. In addition, Resource Solutions helped me to secure accommodation for my first few weeks in Sydney, having this support was fantastic and made it much easier to settle into my new role.

What are the biggest differences between working in the UK and Australia?

I think one of the biggest differences between working in the UK and Australia is the pace. The number of positions I was recruiting in the UK was much higher, which meant the pace in which we were doing things had to be a lot faster whilst also maintaining a high level of service. In Australia, the volumes are lower; but the industry is very relationship-driven so you still need to be one step ahead of the market to ensure you’re continually adding value to your clients.

What does it take to succeed as an on-site recruiter with Resource Solutions?

One of the best parts of working in recruitment is that there is always a lot going on. Getting your priorities right and managing your time effectively will help you stay on top of your game. The ability to build strong relationships with stakeholders at all levels across the organisation is crucial to success.

Reliability is also key. If you want to be perceived as a trustworthy onsite recruiter, you need to be reliable when it comes to punctuality and offering the service you promised within a certain timeframe. If you guarantee that you will have a shortlist of candidates to them in 48 hours, then that’s what you need to do.

What’s your greatest achievement to date?

Attending the high achievers trip to Barbados was an amazing opportunity to network with my colleagues from different offices around the world.

What advice do you have for someone considering an international move?

Do it! Living and working overseas was an amazing experience and I couldn’t recommend it enough. It allowed me to progress my career in the recruitment space from recruiter to team leader and work with some amazing people along the way. Resource Solutions is a big advocate for internal mobility, so there’s plenty of opportunities to explore a completely new market. The opportunities are there, you just need to take them.

What do you like most about the Resource Solutions company culture? 

Resource Solutions is fantastic at ensuring constant employee engagement across the organisation frombusiness updates, androad shows to incentive lunches and tailored training. I took part in a buddy program in the UK where we partnered with recruiters at other sites to share knowledge and new ideas.
