From banking to a career in recruitment
Paul Kalo made the career switch from banking into recruitment in 2009. He started out as a consultant in our senior banking accounting contract division in Sydney, before going on to manage the banking and financial services teams. In 2014 he was given the opportunity to make the move to the UK.
He now runs the treasury team for financial services in our London office and describes why he embraced a career as a recruitment consultant at Robert Walters.
Despite a successful career in banking, Paul was looking for a new challenge. He knew his people skills and industry knowledge could give him the career he was really looking for.
"In my previous life I worked in the treasury department at a small bank in Australia. I enjoyed the work but for me, there was always something missing.
Recruiting from industry
I'd met several Robert Walters consultants and I was struck by how they'd also had careers in treasury or financial services. They hadn't made the move into recruitment for no good reason - they did it because this was where they wanted to be. Recruitment has given me the opportunity to use two of my best assets: industry knowledge and people skills.
International career opportunities
In all honesty, at this stage of my life, I felt the opportunity to work abroad had passed me by. Fortunately, Robert Walters actively encourages consultants to consider moving overseas as part of its career development programme. Having crossed the world to run the London financial services treasury team, moving into recruitment has been one of the best decisions I've ever made. I love the excitement of not knowing what the next day brings.
