From auditor to recruiter

Clara Shing started her career within professional accounting. After three years in external auditing, she was ready for a new challenge. After speaking to her mentor, she was advised to make a move into recruitment. She joined Robert Walters in 2012 and is now manager of our risk and product division in Hong Kong.

How did you get into recruitment?

“After three years in external auditing, I was ready to do something completely different, but wanted to move into an industry where I could still use my professional skills. I decided to make the move into recruitment in late 2007, starting out at a competitor firm before moving to a boutique firm.

How did you then join Robert Walters?

I loved working in recruitment but wanted to move to a global company, where I could really grow my career. I came across Robert Walters and knew it was exactly what I was looking for. I also had a former colleague working here who confirmed that it would be a great next step for me. In October 2012, I joined Robert Walters as a senior consultant specialising in hiring risk management professionals for financial services firms.

How were your skills transferable?

I had learned how to multitask, prioritise and meet strict deadlines in my previous role in external auditing. All of these skills were extremely transferable into my new career, as was my industry experience within finance. At Robert Walters, we hire many professionals from industry - in Hong Kong we have consultants who were former lawyers, auditors and accountants. So even if you don’t come from a recruitment background, you will receive full training around sales, the recruitment cycle and client and candidate management.

What are some of the best things about working at Robert Walters?

We have a fantastic management team in place and get to work with high-calibre clients and candidates. The company has a great corporate culture and is a highly-regarded brand name in the industry. Your development is a key priority here and you will receive training throughout your entire time with us. Even in the first few months after my promotion, I went through a series of new courses, learning how to coach and train junior staff and manage my own billings.

What has been your greatest achievement since you joined?

I’ve successfully developed the risk management desk in the past five years and as a result of that hard work, was promoted to manager in 2015. Robert Walters is a highly meritocratic company, so if you work hard, you will be rewarded.”
