Recruitment careers in South Africa
Saba Miyar joined Robert Walters’ South African business in 2015 as an associate consultant. Since then, she has progressed within the business, gaining experience in recruiting for both financial services and legal professionals.
She now works as an internal recruitment consultant, recruiting for our recruitment process outsourcing (RPO) business, Resource Solutions. We asked her to share her career journey and why she’s so enthusiastic about expanding Resource Solutions.
How did you get into recruitment?
I studied journalism at university and initially started my career in marketing. However, I quickly realised that it wasn’t the right direction for me. I felt uninspired sat at a desk all day and decided to look for a new opportunity that would enable me to go out and meet people.
I came across recruitment opportunities at Robert Walters on LinkedIn and my interest was immediately piqued. I reached out to the internal hiring manager and was invited to attend an interview shortly after.
The interview process only added to my excitement and confirmed my instinct that recruitment was the right fit for me. When I arrived at the Johannesburg office, I was completely blown away by the high standard of the office environment and equally impressed by the professionalism of the consultants I met with. I felt confident that I’d be able to develop a career that I could be proud of at Robert Walters, so I was delighted to accept the offer to join the company’s financial services division.
What do you think are the best things about working in recruitment?
There aren’t many jobs where you have exposure to the CEO and other senior staff members at major international companies, but recruitment is one of them! It’s also immensely satisfying if you enjoy building great relationships with people. For me, one of the best things about working in recruitment is that you have the opportunity to add tremendous value to a business.
What kind of people are you looking for?
Resource Solutions has a strong team culture, so personality is really important. Whenever I meet a candidate for the first time, I always look for passion and a positive attitude. While experience in a sales environment or industry can definitely add value to a recruitment role, having the drive to succeed and help others do the same are essential qualities for Resource Solutions staff.
What sort of skills are transferable?
Recruitment is a relationship-driven industry, so strong communication skills and stakeholder management are highly transferable. Similarly, it’s a fast-paced environment so a background in sales or experience of project management are also beneficial.
How would you describe the company culture?
It’s an incredibly fun and vibrant place to work. We recruit people from a range of backgrounds so it’s a real melting pot of different working styles and experiences and means you’re constantly learning from the people around you.
It’s also a very open and collaborative culture. People feel comfortable asking their colleagues for help or putting their hand up to share their ideas because they know they’ll be met with a positive and encouraging response. And, while there’s no question our people are ambitious, their drive is to achieve success for both themselves and their team. I love seeing our teams working hard to keep each other motivated – it’s a fantastic culture and truly makes me proud to work for the company.
What sort of training opportunities do you offer?
We start all new employees with a two-week formal induction programme, which is designed to help our staff understand our company values and approach and give them the tools they need to perform their roles with confidence. Following this, there are continuous opportunities for professional development, no matter how high you climb the career ladder! Internally, we hold training sessions every few weeks. These are led by senior members of staff from around the business and cover a variety of topics, from client management to how to handle rejection. All our consultants are able to attend these sessions and they’re a fantastic opportunity to learn from experienced professionals.
Why should someone choose a career at Resource Solutions?
Resource Solutions is at the forefront of recruitment innovation, giving you exposure to the latest trends affecting the recruitment industry. Working in recruitment process outsourcing (RPO) also offers the opportunity for you to work in-house with leading clients and is a great choice if you’re looking to explore a new approach to recruitment.
There are so many opportunities available, from international transfers to rapid career progression and even growing a whole new area of the business. In addition, the strong team-based culture and extensive training opportunities means that you’re constantly developing your knowledge and skills. However, for me, the people are what makes working for Resource Solutions truly unique. When you’re surrounded by so many inspiring and positive people, you can’t help but want to push yourself to be the best you can possibly be.
We’re keen to speak to people from industry, sales or recruitment backgrounds, as well as recent graduates. We’re looking for ambitious and driven people, who are passionate about growing a long-term career.
