From sports management to recruitment
Cas van Oort made the move from sports management into recruitment in 2015. He now works as a consultant in our interim division in Amsterdam. He discusses switching careers, the benefits of working at Robert Walters and our current opportunities in the Amsterdam office.
How did you get into recruitment?
“I actually came into recruitment from a sports management background. While it was a really interesting area to work in, I eventually decided I wanted to move into more of a commercial role. I spoke to a recruiter friend of mine who thought that recruitment would be a really good fit for me and a commercial role that I’d enjoy.
Why Robert Walters?
I had interviewed with a couple of other recruitment firms in the Netherlands but found there to be too much of a focus on hard sales. What impressed me about Robert Walters in comparison was that the role was more about building long term relationships with clients and candidates, rather than that hard sell mentality. We also work in a team based commission structure which means that there’s less of a competitive environment and a greater emphasis on working together as a team.
Describe the culture
We work really hard but we also have a lot of fun. Aside from team dinners, incentives, summer parties and Christmas parties, we also socialise together outside of work. It’s a meritocratic environment where success is rewarded, for instance last year we all went on a team ski trip to Austria. While the work is hard the rewards are commensurate, as a successful recruiter you can earn good money.
What’s great about working here is the autonomy you have in your role. Here I have the freedom to manage my own agenda, visit clients and make deals. How I go about achieving my targets is down to me. I enjoy having the opportunity to be entrepreneurial and that’s a big part of the culture at Robert Walters.
What sort of people are you looking for in Amsterdam?
We have people from quite a diverse range of backgrounds in the Amsterdam office, from hospitality to sports and even psychology. While we hire people with HR backgrounds and look for people who are hardworking and sales minded, above all we look for people who can build lasting relationships. Those who are personable and friendly and who genuinely like meeting other people, will do very well in recruitment.
Opportunities in Amsterdam
At the moment we are looking for people across the board in our Amsterdam office, particularly in our contracting, tax, commerce, banking and finance divisions.”
