Natasha's 'life-changing' experience in Tsavo

As part of our partnership with the Global Angels Foundation, the Robert Walters Group sends eight staff volunteers each year to Tsavo in southern Kenya, working with the local people to build up critical pieces of the community’s infrastructure. Through volunteer work and financial investment, we’re working to help transform Tsavo and create a future that’s truly sustainable for all its residents.

Natasha (Tash) Kahn, administration manager for our Robert Walters Australia business in Sydney, describes how helping to change the lives of the community in Tsavo was also a life-changing experience for her.

How did you help while you were volunteering in Tsavo?

“While we were in Tsavo, we were able to contribute and assist on a few different projects. On the very first day after our orientation with the Global Angels team, we dug holes and planted seeds in the fields in preparation for the rainy season. For the next two days, we all worked on sanding down, priming and painting the farm community centre.”

What was your most memorable moment of the trip?

“There are so many special moments, it’s hard to pick one; but for me, it has to be the visit to the local school. We gave out balloons and little planes to the children there — to see their smiles and to hear the noise of the balloons being blown up is something I will never forget. It brought tears to my eyes. I have a video of this moment and I look at it often."

What have you learned from the experience?

“I have been reminded that happiness doesn’t come from a ‘like’ on a photo or owning a certain brand of clothing. Happiness comes from tiny little moments that bring joy and from appreciating everything you have and are given. It has reminded me to appreciate everything I have and to cherish moments with those I love.”

Why would you recommend volunteering with Global Angels to others?

"I would recommend volunteering with Global Angels because it gives you the opportunity to truly give back and be part of something amazing. This experience has changed my life for the better. I would go back to Tsavo and work with Global Angels again in a heartbeat and I would recommend it to anyone.”

If you could sum up your experience in one word, what would it be?

“Life-changing.”
